7 reasons why The Office struck a chord with so many

I discovered The Office during the pandemic. Like almost everyone I know who watched the show, I fell in love with it and couldn't stop watching it over and over. To be honest, I completed my 3rd run yesterday and will probably start my next rewatch tomorrow. But why did this show receive so much love?

  1. The characters

Every character arc in the show has been constructed beautifully. No matter how weird their personality is, each of them shows growth throughout the journey. Be it, Pam, gaining her confidence, Dwight realizing his love for Angela, or Ryan, finally mastering the art of commitment as he runs off into the sunset with Kelly. (We cannot be a hundred percent sure about that one though.)

2. The jokes

Now, all comedies cannot be funny to everyone. But The office resonated with almost everyone because of the various comic styles. Be it people of sarcasm for whom Jim is enough. Or people who find the dumb guy funny for which there is the famous accountant Kevin Malone.

3. The Cringe

I don’t think I have ever cringed as hard as I did while watching ‘Scotts Tots’. The way the show makes it so uncomfortable is part of what makes it so great. The director of the show Paul Feig has explained, “To me, the most awful embarrassing moments in your life are so hellish when you’re going through them, that to sit like a horror movie in a safe position and watch somebody else go through something that you’ve been through, is so liberating”

4. The filming

The zooming in on various characters’ faces and making sure we knew their exact feelings is humorous. This brought us closer to each of the characters because such small details would’ve otherwise gone unnoticed. It also helped us understand each characters’ personality better. We wouldn't have gotten Jim’s classic look without it.

5. No laughter track

Most shows put in the laughter track that kind of annoys you. No laughter track allows you to laugh only at the things you find funny. The subtle reactions of the characters are so much funnier. The way Micheal does something out of the blue and no one is surprised makes me laugh the most.

6. Relatable

Although not many bosses around would try to build Tube city in the office, a lot of the characters in the show are very relatable. Be it people like Stanley or Phyllis who just want to get through the day and leave work as soon as possible, Jim, who goes along with almost everything trying to have fun along the way, Pam who does not dare to speak up or make tough decisions or Toby who I think fits perfectly the stereotype of HR.

7. Micheal Scott

The reason why most people keep coming back to the show. He is full of insecurity, lacks sensitivity, and has a constant urge to be liked. He gets into the most uncomfortable situations (mostly the ones he creates for himself). However with all of his complexities, one cannot deny that he is the best boss one could have. He considers his employees to be his family and tries to be there for them in every way(even when they don’t want him to).
